THE BEGINNING

In the beginning (1999-2004) we were known as the Frederick Douglass Republican Family, a Jersey City Civic Association. In 1999 & 2000 we had a parade on Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City to bring awareness to Juneteenth.

In 2001 we joined  (NJOF) National Juneteenth Observance Foundation.  In the year 2001 we joined NJOF in Washington D. C. for a speaking engagement to bring awareness to Juneteenth and to make it a day of observance in the United States.

Rev. Ronald Meyers appointed, Mofalc Olei Meinga the NJOF, Director for New Jersey.

In 2002 we marched from the home of Frederick Douglass 1411 W Street SE in Anacostia, neighborhood east of the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington D.C. Established in 1988 as a National Historic Site, the site preserves the home and estate of Frederick Douglass. We began our March to the Capital bringing awareness to Juneteenth and to make it a day of Observance like Flag Day in the United States.

In 2003 we walked from Fredrick Douglass home at Capitol hill located at 316 A Street Northeast to the Capital.

Over many years we continued to work with NJOF chairmen Rev. Ronald Meyers to make Juneteenth a day of observance in all states.

The year 2004 Juneteenth became

"Juneteenth Independence Day” in the state of New Jersey.  It was to be celebrated the third Saturday in June beginning in the year of 2004; in the state of New Jersey, during Governor Jim McGreevey administration.

That year we changed our name to Frederick Douglass Juneteenth Celebration.  We continued to work with NJOF chairmen Rev. Ronald Meyers to make Juneteenth a day of observance in all states.

We began working nationally instead of locally until the year 2015.

This is when we had our first flag raising at City Hall in Jersey City, during Mayor Steven Fulop administration. Frederick Douglass Juneteenth Celebration (FDJC) continues to have, flag raisings every year, at Jersey City Hall 2020 being our 6th year.

FDJC continues to spread the word about Juneteenth throughout New Jersey.

In 2019 Elizabeth NJ, they had their first Flag raising & Juneteenth Caravan in 2020

by the New Jersey Unified Juneteenth Committee.

In 2020 the FDJC had a flag raising in Jersey City and Linden NJ at city hall plus a Juneteenth Caravan through the streets of Linden, led by the Mayor of the city of Linden NJ; the Honorable Derek Armstead.
